How long per day? | ||

Every weekday for the last 1 1/2 years-
Approx. 1 hour of Mandarin radio commentary Approx. 90 minutes of Mandarin TV news both from Taiwan and Mainland China. On the weekends it's more soap operas and sermons amounting to 2 hours daily. 20 minutes of unscripted spontaneous self-talk daily. 30 minutes of vocab review daily. Yes it's overkill but I can do much of it at work, even the self-talk as I sit in an office cubicle with a headset. When I started this regimen I could barely understand the weekly Mandarin sermons so I gave up in frustration, but now I have understood 57 of the last 60 sermons, and I quiz myself on each one by cross referencing with a Bible afterwards. For example I had never heard the story of Hannah in the Bible, and I actually learned it thru the medium of Mandarin. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I try to aim for little bits even on busy days--thirty minutes minimum. On great days it's anywhere from ninety minutes to six-seven hours, but these are happening further and further apart as of late.

I average about five hours a day, five days per week. This includes formal language study as well as reading in French and German.

In 2013 I averaged 1hr,15min of study per day. This was only counting course
materials, although I didn't do many extra activities such as TV,reading,podcasts, whatever that year. In 2014 I averaged 2hrs,32min of study a day. This included everything- courses, watching movies, reading books, listening to podcasts, listening to audio courses while commuting to and from work. This year I'm around 2hrs,40min a day on average counting everything. These hours of study are all for French. In 2014 I did some Dutch and in 2013 some Spanish and Dutch, but not a great deal. French has been my main focus. I'm a perfectionist so a lot of learning time especially with courses has been arguably more easily attained due to over analytical study habits that sees me easily pass an hour as I analyse everything I come across. Although this has changed lately, for the better. It seems I'm extra analytical with French as I am not definitely not as fussy with other languages I have studied. All in all it depends on your constraints, your lifestyle, committments, tolerance for study, methods you use and so on. I've always had the figure of 90 minutes a day of one particular language would see most people progress very nicely in that language. It's a good amount of time to get enough flow and exposure to new concepts/vocab etc, but not too much to burn out (for most). Many would disagree :) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I spend an average of 3-4 hours per day every day. This includes course work, reading, writing, listening, and watching movies.

Probably 3+ hours per day. Most of that is sub-optimal. While driving in the car, reading and listening here

Wow some of you do loads! I'm aiming to do two hours of German a day. One hour of Rosetta Stone followed by an hour of Michel Thomas. Some days I go over by watching a movie or some TV but I've only recently started learning so I don't understand most of whats being said. I'm finding nickelodeon Jr Germany very good though.
