This is real cool but Subtitles in the same language as the one you are learning will help you learn the language faster!..and it works powerfully for Japanese and Chinese!
Here are the highlights! "Does video help humans learn spoken Chinese? One study comparing audio input only vs. audio plus video inputs has been carried out. Behavioral measures on several tasks showed that audio plus video condition produced faster recognition (taken to indicate more robust learning) of Chinese Characters than did audio only, especially for characters whose pronunciations were less familiar to the learner" "This is an interesting validation that the use of multiple representations does indeed improve human learning in a real classroom setting." They go on to say they do not know why it works..Who care why? Just do it!..I could not find any Swdedish movies with swedish subs until today.. Here is another study summary! "Vocabulary retention in the bimodal group was found to be significantly higher than that in the reversed and traditional groups. No significant differences were found between the reversed and traditional groups" "With bimodal video students are exposed to real language, spoken at normal speed. They have advantage of subtitles that serve as linguistic help when the audio is too fast or too difficult to understand. The subtitles can be added to the video using one of bimodal programs. Other choice are authentic videotaped TV shows that have been closed captioned for the hearing impaired" Now this is new LANGUAGE voice and new LANGUAGE SUBS..BUT EVEN NATIVE LANGUAGE SUBS AND NEW LANGUAGE VOICE STILL WORKED BUT NOT AS WELL.. And check this out!!! "The experiment showed that reading skills can improve, at least initially, simply from exposure to the language. However, a rapid improvement was showed after students watched songs subtitled in the same language. "The experiment became a reality in Gujarat, India. Adult learners also showed measurable improvement in reading skills after watching subtitled songs. The experiment shows that same language subtitling makes reading practice incidental, automatic and sub-conscious"... Can we say Osmosis..Ashley? Subtitles can definitely be useful, especially with DVDs.

Yes, such a thing will be very helpful in addition to structured study, I'm glad you agree. Learners did show improvement when that strategy was added to their curriculum. Why don't you add it to the collection of tips for language learners here:

I could not figure out the word Beratta in my swedish book. I had an idea because the word had come up about 4 times..I was playing with the sentences and then had a good idea what it meant..but refused to look it up..(if it takes too long move on)
Then I watched "Mitt Liv som hund" "My life as a dog" last night(with English subtitles). A great movie!..This morning I watch just 30 minutes with "no subtitles" this time..(I will be watching it 4 more times in the next week) I am into the story and I figure out that beratta means "Tell" I still do not own this word though!! I have discovered that it must be used in real life for the brain to take it serious Why? Well brain is saying " Listen.. I have a trillion things to do today in your body..and it was fun figuring out what berrata means..but unless you use it I am going to file it away" Today immediately in McDonalds i say " I will beratta you what I want" Or if i know more svenska words i will use it with beratta.. The girl does not care in McDonalds..she only hears Big mac.. I have found using the words immediately locks them in Take care 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Ummm, Healing332
What does this method of using words in English sentences do to your social standing. Wont people think you are a show off, or a wierdo or something? And does it not impair conversation, especcially when you reach a much more advanced level. I mean, with 1 word, yes its easy to guess the meaning. With more, it gets harder and harder. I can see the definite benefits of what you say, and they are large and extremely beneficial, but what do you do to counteract what I said above?? Jag kan inte beratta varfor hon ar dod.. I cannot tell why she is dead I wrote that without thinking more than 2 seconds.. Now i have only been doing Svenska for almost 3 weeks and have just started reading in my Svenska bok for about a week i think.. The only Swedish word I knew 2 weeks ago was "Swedish" meatballs at my neighborhood deli... Breaking down the movies and watching them 5 times in a week and reading in Swedish just opens the language..if the movie bores you.. change it out for another I watch 1 or 2 times with subs..then no subs over the next 4or 5 times but (always putting them back if you need more story understand) Remember I do not just watch movies i "absorb" them and "listen" to the words.. i rewind on revelant scenes like greetings..dinner..breakfast..arguements.. "listen" to the words like someone is giving you next weeks lotto numbers Somehow when speaking the words..you recall other words and form sentences Also if I say something to myself at work like.."I am hungry".. i will try to remember to tell myself say that in Swedish..Jag Hungrid.. It is like having Dr.Pimsluer in my head..i say to myself.."Can you say that it Swedish" People wait to speak because they don't want to look silly.. I think this will stop you from learning..(throw in a free fsi course and you will be fine) even one word say it..Me..I had no time ..I had 3 horny friends competing with me for latina girls..i had to just start speaking Spanish.. I admit, speaking someone's language to pull hot chics is a great way of doing it, and throwing in a few words is better than none. And as I mentioned in my previous post, It is extremely beneficial to do this. However, this girl in the McDonalds. Say that you are almost fluent in Swedish in a few months time and you go to this girl in McDonalds and say "Jag ska säga dig vad du vill ha: En big mac" (Translation courtesy of Olof Lundgren) What will she think? If it was me, no offence, I would think "Oh my god, this guy is Swedish and I dont know how to talk to him :S" OR if I knew you from around I would this "What the f***. This guy is american. Why is he talking to me in this language. What a wierdo/jerk/whatever". No offence meant, im just pointing out what Im trying to say, so you can answer my question of what you do to counteract it. That's what I mean by social standing. It's all very well not caring. But what's the point in not caring when you are just losing every friend you got (in an extreme case of course).
