I was listening to English carols on Youtube, and a thought struck me:
"Why don't I listen to some German carols?"
So, I was wondering if any German speakers could recommend some nice German carols. I can find some German translations of carols through wikipedia, but I do want to listen to some carols which were written originally in German. At the moment I can only think of Stille Nacht and In Dulci Jubilio (part in German).
Thank you for responding to this rather "lightweight" thread. :)

Oh, Jiwon, here you have a real "Weihnachstlieder" - expert at hand. I can play seven of them on my guitar and sing the texts in German and Dutch. (That's what we do on Christmas!!!)
I will enumerate you the most wellknown German Christmas carols:
- Alle Jahre wieder
- Süßer die Glocken nie klingen
- Leise rieselt der Schnee
- Kling Glöckchen, kling!
- Am Weihnachstbaum die Lichter brennen
- O du fröhliche
- Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht (= Silent Night)
- Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
- O Tannenbaum
- Ihr Kinderlein kommet
- Schneeflöckchen, Weißröckchen
- Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann
- Zu Bethlehem geboren
I think that this is quite a lot to start with. You can have a look on You Tube what is recorded and if you are lucky, you can perhaps find the songtexts and notes of some carols on the internet. Good luck!

Thank you Fasulye. You are so helpful as always... :)
Obviously, I already know O du fröhliche (We learnt it as "Oh How Joyfully"), Stille Nacht, and O Tannebaum. I've managed to find a choir singing Alle Jahre wieder, and it seems to be very simple and nice. :)
I see there are two versions of Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen. Which one is the more popular one? Vulpius or Praetorius? They are both really beautiful though..

About "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" I can't say anything, because it's not in my own repertoire that means, I don't sing or play it.
I have got three special "Christmas Songbooks" with notes and guitar/piano chords of mostly German carols, but also the most wellknown English ones. So I have both possibilities to play them either on my guitar or my melodica. But in these books there is no further information on the history of these carols.
I don't know, if you play a music instrument, but "Alle Jahre wieder" has a very simple melody and is therefore easy to play.

Ok, I figured out which one is the more popular version. Listening to around 5 recordings on Youtube helped me out.
I can't play any instruments, but I'll just sing them unaccompanied, in the true spirit of a capella! ;)
Don't you think it might be a really good collaboration project if all the polyglots on Youtube could upload carols in different languages? :D

There are highly professional polyglot musicians like Glossika for example. I never practised my instruments every day, I only play (and sing) occasionally. Under these circumstances I cannot reach a high music level. It's nice for me to make music in group of friends or even to perform in a club playing and singing together with some club members, but I don't find my level of music high enough for You Tube.

Of course, Glossika can play some amazing piano. Well, if you don't feel comfortable uploading videos of you making music, that's completely understandable. :)
I might make a video of me singing a carol, just for the fun of it and to wish everyone happy Christmas. Perhaps I could get my brother to sing with me when I go to Sri Lanka?
Mmm.. Now I love "Es ist ein Ros' entprungen" and "Zu Bethlehen geboren". There are some AMAZING choir recordings out there. Tölzer Knabenchor sings so beautifully! :D

So much inspired I just fetched my guitar to play and sing "Ihr Kinderlein kommet".
But there is a technical obstacle. When we record You Tube videos we use the microphone in the camera. Of course somebody could sing a capella and this gets recorded. I wouldn't sing without my instrument. To play the guitar AND sing you need two microphones, because otherwise you get a messy recording. I tried this out with a sound upload in this forum (playing and singing) and the recording sounded very unbalanced, you could hardly hear the guitar. So if I upload somthing on You Tube I want to have certain standard of technical quality.
