Now I'm listening to the German carols yet again.. It just reminds me of how much time has passed since I started this journey. :)

We will have a Christmas guitar meeting today, where we three people will play the following 7 German Christmas carols on the guitar and sing:

- Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
- Schneeflöckchen, Weißröckchen
- Am Weihnachstbaum die Lichter brennen
- Kling Glöckchen klingelingeling
- Ihr Kinderlein kommet
- Leise rieselt der Schnee
- Süßer die Glocken nie klingen

"Stille Nacht" is performed and sung in German here in the United States with some regularity. I don't know the history but I think that the original version was written in Austria or Germany many years ago. This is an instance where nolstagic thoughts of Christmas prompts people to want to sing in the language in which it was composed.

The funny thing is, in this largely monolingual country (except for Spanish, of course), that it is a carol that everyone knows, and when schoolchildren sing it in German, they already know the meaning when they sing the German words.

It makes you wonder about the use of music to teach language in early childhood education. To my knowledge, it's not done much, but maybe it should be!
