Hi all,

This is my first post so please be gentle with me. By the way, I love the website and
the forum.   I have not really had time to explore properly yet but I have already
found some really useful stuff.   So here is my problem:

NEED LOADS OF FRENCH FILMS FOR NOTHING OR NEXT TO NOTHING!

I have given myself 3 months to relearn french to the native fluency I had 30 years
ago. After that comes 6 months for German to obtain native fluency and ditto Italian
and then Spanish.   (I had b level in Italian and b/c in German 30 years ago).

I will be using my own program which I know will work but part of this program is
watching at least 5 hours of films, television etc per day.

So I need to find a huge supply of foreign films - starting with french films. I will
be needing around 2 films a day.   I have looked at DVD hire and Video on Demand firms
like Lovefilms and the like (I trawled through a few french sites) but that option
would be horrendously expensive I feel.

I have an idea that the solution must lie with old VHS tapes. Easy you might think -
just put a wanted ad on le bon coin. But it will only take registration from an
address inside France.   I tried a couple of french Freecycle sites but the moderators
did not even bother to reply to my registration. I also tried emailing a couple of
french recycling plants but they won't help me (they say there is no facility for
sorting VHS tapes and they are just thrown away).

I can get hold of an unlimited supply of english VHS tapes for peanuts. Rugby
council tip has a shop run for Age Concern where people can drop off stuff they think
someone else might want. They sell VHS tapes at 5 for a pound.   I noticed the other
day that they did not have so many as previously.   The guy told me that there was no
drop off in supply - they had just stopped taking them because they were offered so
many! I told him my idea of swapping English VHS for french tapes with someone in
France.   He said, "no problem, we'll start taking them again and I'll get a big bag
for you next time you come for a couple of quid".

So how do I find my french VHS exchange partner?    Any takers?
Any suggestions as to what forums to post on?

Incidentally, I started about 2 weeks ago and I have found streaming on Canal+,
France Inter and France 24 really useful.   France Inter has about 30 documentaries
that stream (The "Vue sure Terre" travelogues are great) but I have just about run out
of those now.    I watch the JT on France Inter and France 24 and Le Grand Journal of
Canal+ (but am waiting for that to start up again after the holidays). Having
exhausted the free documentaries I really need to find some films. I want to watch all
the french classic films (Le Quai des Brumes, L'Atalante, La Regle du Jeu etc). I
only want french films incidentally - I'm not that interested in dubbed Holywood films.

By the way, even though I am really desperate for french films at the moment,   if any
germans, Italians or Spanish want to do a swap - I'll be happy to oblige with those
tapes as well.   I will select only good tapes for you - no trashy stuff. For myself
I don't mind thrillers or "policiers" as long as they are good native ones.

There might be some issues with playing back the tapes on different systems.   For
myself, I am happy to cross that bridge when I come to it. I might have to get a
french player and my exchange partner might have to get an English player.    I can get
an endless supply of video players for £10 each by the way.

Please swamp me with suggestions!

Cheers Chris

To find Spanish movies I just type 'español parte 1' into YouTube and get loads of results.
Do that in French it should work.

Hi Biscotti,

Good idea! I typed "Francais premiere partie" and got a lot of results. It seems to
involve scrolling down through a quite a lot rubbish though to find the rare gems.
Quality is also not always great on youtube.

Keep the ideas coming please!

Cheers Chris

This post stopped me from giving up on my French!

I figure if I've already bought the DVD once in another language I shouldn't have to pay for it again just for the French dubbing (not that I would watch it illegally *COUGH*) as the industry just isn't geared up for providing additional audio tracks to language learners abroad, shocking as though it is for us ;)

You can use dpstream.net to get shows dubbed in French. Hopefully it's useful.

Try "Google Videos" where they have long form French films on-line for free:

Thanks all - particularly Rmss for your dpstream solution.   I just watched Le Quai des
Brumes on it. I think its a bit cheeky though - they are obviously streaming stuff
from file sharing.   TomH I've looked into file sharing. It seems like there are some
issues with malware. Being an old fart, I'm not too good with technology so if there
is some malware out there I would be likely to pick it up.   I've thought of a solution
though. I'm going to get a cheap 2nd PC off ebay and just use that for filesharing
purposes.   That way, any malware is not going to do much harm.

I still like my idea of finding a source of old VHS tapes. Apart from anything else it
is legal. I've sent an email to an auction house in Calais. I'm sure that old VHS
tapes must turn up by the hundred in house clearances.

Cheers Chris

chrissyboy, where in the UK are you? Do you have an Alliance Française near you?

They may be able to help you out with finding movies. I suggest them, because it's my understanding that they sort of function in the same capacity that Italian Cultural Centers or Institutos Cervantino do for Italian and Spanish language learners/aficionados.

Just a thought.
