In your opinion what language, other than English, has the best media across the board? (i.e: TV, radio, newspapers, film, literature, etc.) I've been thinking about it lately and there's such a wide breadth of English media available. I'm wondering who our closest competitor is in this regard.

You can make a case for a lot of countries. I personally prefer Asian (Northeast) cinema and TV (dramas, variety, etc.)

I enjoy Korean media the most (mainly the music, dramas, and variety shows) and it seems quite popular in many Asian countries. I've listened to Korean music almost exclusively for much longer than I've been seriously studying Korean.

Japanese. No contest. Especially now that I've learned (some ;) ) classical Japanese I've come to know how rich Japanese literature really is. Anyone who achieved an advanced level should learn how to read the classics!
Also, movies, comics, great newspapers.. count me in!

As far as cinema I have heard that "Bollywood" is bigger than "Hollywood". Music ohhh that is tough, I thought of this very question a few days ago and my thoughts are: Protuguese, French, and Spanish. These three languages seem to have it covered from the smooth sweet voices to the anthem club bangers. Music is really important to me when it comes to language learning and some languages are strong in one area, but lack horribly in another. Dutch rap is very good and has a balance of underground style, party beats, and old school feel to it, without sounding well extremely corny. Italian has lovely classical music, however, current music in the Italian language seems to fall in the genre of "adult contemporary". French has artists across the board: indie style like coeur de pirate, la patere rose, quirky rap TTC, etc. Spanish has a lot of dance music from traditional to club hits, same with Portuguese...just a few small examples. I realize in all languages there are hidden gems when it comes to music but that is the thing a lot seem to be hidden. Maybe some generalizations were made here, but I think you get my drift.

Please feel free to correct me here if I am wrong, especially with Italian because I am struggling to find stuff.
