Do you want to practice your colloquial French vocabulary? Do you have a slightly
colorful sense of humor? I recently ran across
Vie de merde, a French site that collects all
those frustrating little moments in life. A sample:

Aujourd'hui, c'est mon anniversaire. Pour me faire plaisir, mon copain me dit
qu'il va m'apporter mon petit déjeuner au lit. Curieuse, je décide de me lever pour
voir ce qu'il fabrique. Il était en train de vider mes pots de yaourt pour récupérer la
confiture au fond et la mettre sur des tartines. VDM

"Today is my birthday. To make me happy, my boyfriend tells me that he's going to bring
me breakfast in bed. Curious, I decide to get up to see what he is making. He is in the
process of emptying my yogurt containers to recover the jam at the bottom and putting
it on the toast."

Aujourd'hui, retour de vacances après avoir confié la maison à notre fille de 18 ans
pendant une semaine. Un seul détail l'a trahie. Le réservoir d'eau du frigo américain
rempli de vodka. VDM

I think this is great stuff, because:

1. There's a ton of colloquial and informal language.
2. The orthography is better than what I usually find in web forums.
3. The stories are funny.
4. Each story fits nicely on an SRS card.

This seems like an amusing alternative to all those books of outdated teen slang.

A few years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I regularly tutored a student in French for community service
hours. I actually taught her some vocabulary using these as exercises!

...Of course, now I wonder what I was thinking, since at the time VDM didn't separate out the really dirty ones from
the rest of the pack. Sorta playing with fire there.

Yes, one reads there about the deceptions of aspiring polyglotts, too:
"Aujourd'hui, après huit mois passés aux États-Unis, j'ai eu l'agréable surprise de voir que mon interview télévisée réalisée en anglais et portant sur mes travaux de doctorat a été sous-titrée... en anglais. VDM"
