I've just found this:
http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php
Is this a well-known material? As far as I can work out, it seems to take the learner to conversational ability in any language listed along the side. Completely for free. Is this true? If it's as good as I think it seems to be, why isn't everyone raving about it?

Yes, it's true. FSI is often talked about here in the forum. It's a well-liked program by a lot of people here.
It's free because it was created by US government employees on the taxpayers' dime, which means it can't carry a copyright.

Oh. My. God.
I think the amount of time I spend on the internet is about to quadruple.

Only a rather bad textbook for Japanese there though.

A number of years back I used to see these courses for sale in bookstores--maybe they still sell them--but now for the most part you can download all the content for free. The FSI Hebrew was hard for me to work with for various reasons, but FSI courses have a serious following around here, and the price is now absolutely unbeatable.

The "search" feature, found via the button in the banner at the top of your Htlal page, allows three types of
searches: "text" search, Google searching, and by tag. FSI (Programs) is a tag used in 551 threads. Additionally,
there's a very useful "100 best posts" tab for those search results (next to the tab for the 551 threads). One of
my favourite posts is the first one in that list: "Lessons learned from 50 years ...". I have a printout of it on the
wall near my study area.
Enjoy your FSI course. (Though I don't recommend the Italian. I own and have tried some of the French. It's quite
thorough, though some people may find it a tad dry. But given the price, you have nothing to lose by trying it
out.)

If you are surprised you shall check sywtlal
"This page contains 2, 396 instructional language e-books for 428 languages. "
All free and legal.
Including DLI course which have similar approach to FSI, but have more pages (Korean course if downloaded all the volumes together has around 2000 pages)
I must say though that I don't like the 'learn-the-whole-dialogue' approach.
It's for people who take 6 hours class everyday in the language.
