Forgot to update in a while...
My new books are 23. Η ευρωπαϊκή ιδέα, η ευρωπαϊκή ένωση, η Ελλάδα by Γεώργιος Κοντογεώργης 24. Piccolo viaggio nell'anima tedesca by Vanna Vannuccini (read my review) 25. Cruzada en Jeans by Thea Beckman (originally a Dutch book, but I found it in Spanish at the 1 € bookstore and couldn't resist) 26. Ο χρόνος πάλι by Σωτη τριανταφύλλου Also, I enrolled in two Chinese classes at Dalarna University: Chinese Speech and Writing IV and Chinese Modern Literature. Both require a lot of homework and the teachers speak Chinese all the time, so it's almost like going to university in China - I love it! I was a bit concerned that the first class is only IV level, but it seems that the Swedes really know what they are doing, because the class seems about equal to my Oberstufe VII classes at the local Chinese Culture Institute in Berlin. Other than that, not much new on the language-study side, except that I created a video in which I speak 13 languages in 16 minutes, obviously massacring a lot of them. Right now, most of my time goes to promoting my project LearnYu, a Chinese course with a similar approach as Duolingo, but more conversation-focussed. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I still have a copy of that book in Dutch (by Thea Beckman), at least I think so. When we

I just came back from a very intensive French course in Bergerac. By very intensive, I
mean that I counted 12-14 hours of French every day for a week - which really helped me towards my yearly goal. When I started out on this trip, I was lagging 60 hours behind where I should be, now I'm more than 20 hours ahead! Plus my French reached a new level where speaking it is automatic, not deliberate. I read a few books since the last update: 27. How to be an alien by George Mikes 28. 狂人日记 by 鲁迅 (A Madman's diary by Lu Xun; this was for my Chinese class) 29. Paradise and Power by Robert Kagan 30. Magasin Général Tome 1: Marie by Régis Loisel 31. Il était une fois en France Tome 1 : L'empire de Monsieur Joseph by Fabien Nury 32. Amère Patrie (Tome 1 & 2) by Frédéric Blier My Modern Chinese Literature class is over now; I just have to write a final paper. Instead, I will soon have Chinese Linguistics classes. First, I need to catch up on the class I missed while in France though. We have long make-up assignments... Yawn. And get some sleep. Instead of falling asleep on the night train in Paris and waking up in Berlin, I had to change trains at 3am and 6am, after an entire day of traveling up from Southern France already. The only bright side is that Roberto took me to some bookstores during my layover in Paris and I now have a dozen new books in French and Italian. Also, note I'm organizing a Polyglot Workshop with Richard Simcott and Alex Rawlings on November 15. Would be awesome to see some of you there! I originally intended to dedicate a weekend to trying to squeeze in as much Swedish
(from scratch) as possible and see where that would get me, but November is shaping up to be a month of intense *work* most of all. Not just the workshop, which went really well, but also several projects of mine are coming to a head at the same time. Fortunately I committed to those Chinese classes at Dalarna, because they're keeping me honest and doing my share of Chinese. Yesterday I spent 4 hours and 20 minutes doing Chinese: 2 hours in class and then more time preparing a Powerpoint presentation on Zhuge Liang - a Chinese historic figure that is comparable to Sun Tze in the minds of people. In terms of books, just three new ones to report: 33. Nationalisme in Europa en de Sovjetunie - Emancipatie of onderdrukking in een nieuw gewaad by Stan Verschuuren. A really fascinating collection of essays on the history of nationalist sentiment, tracing how it first came to be and how it shaped history/politics from Catalonia to Kazakhstan. 34. Anekdoten der Macht by Peter Maria Slama. Disappointing. 35. When Prophecy Fails: a Social and Psychological Study of a Modern Group that Predicted the Destruction of the World by Leon Festinger. I just hit my yearly hour goal and broke my own record!
As of today, I have spent 714 hours on languages this year, when my original goal was 700. My previous record was 712 hours in 2011. Given my crazy on/off work, I had only managed 569 hours in 2012 and 643 hours in 2013, so I am REALLY happy to break this record. We'll see how many more hours I can add before the end of the year. I'm not counting time spent using German, English or Esperanto, because that would make the count pointless; I spent all day speaking those. So the best contributions to this total are a) my Chinese classes, esp. the ones at Dalarna. I studied 330 hours of Chinese alone and my level has improved drastically. I am able to speak Chinese much more fluently, I gave a number of Powerpoint presentations in Chinese and I just wrote a short essay on linguistics in Chinese. b) my intensive French course. French ranks second highest at 150 hours. By contrast, my other languages have been kind of meh, below 60 hours each - but that's to be expected; most years I have two strong languages and several that don't get so much attention. I'm okay with that, as long as I'm making great progress in two languages and keep the others at the same level or better. In this case, I think I made small improvements in almost all my languages. I'm nowhere near my book goal yet though and it's looking increasingly unlikely. I'll give it another push. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

I just recorded a presentation in Chinese as a lasting record of my current level. The
topic is "Distinguishing languages and dialects" - I originally prepared this presentation for my beginning Chinese linguistics class at Dalarna University.
