FSI's "From Spanish to Portuguese" is useful if you are an English-speaker who knows Spanish well and are planning a trip to Brazil. It in no way substitutes for a complete course like FSI Basic or DLI Portuguese Basic Course. Also, if your goal is the Iberian pronunciation and features, it will serve to confuse you. Brazilian and Iberian Portuguese are one language but there are differences in grammar and pronunciation that can confuse beginners. After gaining a bit more experience with the language, it's not that difficult to become familiar with the other variety and not have it affect your pronunciation or usage.

Like many people, I, too, thought it would be a natural to use a resource like FSI From Spanish to Portuguese. How could it not be? What I found was that it caused me to think too much of Portuguese in terms of how it relates to Spanish and not on it's own merits. When I dropped it and started to see the differences for myself and began to see Portuguese as its own, separate but similar, language, I made more rapid progress. That being said, that's my experience. YMMV.
