Hello,
I've been trying to research to find out if MSA and Egyptian dialect have different spelling for verbs that have the same meaning. I've been looking but I couldn't find anything about it. I'm learning the Egyptian dialect right now and I don't want to buy all of the MSA books to find out that I'm going away from what I want to learn. Since the prefixes and affixes of some dialect forms differ from the corresponding MSA forms, they can have different spellings. For example, you might find بكتب /baktub/ instead of أكتب /aktubu/ (I write). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

You might take a look at the new series of books by Matthew Aldrich published by Lingualism; these include a book and exercise book on the Egyptian colloquial Arabic verb system, a separate book on MSA verbs, and a learner's Arabic-English dictionary for MSA.
You can see sample pages at the Lingualism website: http://www.lingualism.com/ (The website also has some audio, flashcards, drills, etc.) There's also the "look inside" feature for the books at Amazon.com, where the reviews generally seem to be very positive. Thank you for the information!!! It helped me out a lot just because of the words, "Egyptian Colloquial Arabic". Now I know what to look for. Doitsujin, Cool username. I noticed that the words and pronunciation does change a little with some words but for other words it changes completely. Hopefully the memory game won't be too tough to play with I start learning the Gulf dialect. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

In most dialects consonant changes follow somewhat predictable patterns. The most common changes are: ث /th/ becomes ت /t/ or س /s/ ج /dj/ becomes /g/ or /zh/ (as in French journal) ذ /dh/ becomes د /d/ or ز /z/ ظ /DH or Z/ becomes ض/D/ or ذ /dh/ ق /q/ becomes ء /'/ (glottal stop) or /g/ Arabic at a glance by Hilary Wise contains a nicely done appendix that about the major differences between the major dialects (Dialects of the Arab World).
If you plan to visit the Gulf states, you may want to skip Egyptian Colloquial Arabic altogether, because both dialects are very different. I'd recommend Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia by Clive Holes. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Doitsujin: I'll learn Gulf and Egyptian just to be safe because I plan to go to Egypt and to Saudi Arabia. Thanks for the link to the book. I was looking for Gulf Arabic books but couldn't find any. I guess I wasn't using the right words.

jamesleecoleman: It's just a supplementary source to show how some things function in EA
against MSA. I use DLI course - I like the courses by DLI very much. BTW, their course of MSA is the best I've seen, although it may seem there is too little vocabulary about daily life activities. What I like about it though is that it covers all the grammatical matters and there are hours and hours of audio material. I also have Colloquial Arabic of Egypt, Pimsleur Egyptian Arabic (part I) and some other books 1 person has voted this message useful |
