I was learning the words for the times of the day in Japanese when I ran into different
ways of saying tomorrow/yesterday morning/night (明朝 vs 明日の朝, 明晩 vs 明日の晩, etc). I think the denotative meanings are the same because of the kanjis, but do they have differences in formality? In daily language, the second form is more used. However, they are slightly different in terms of politeness or formality. The first form is more polite (明朝・明晩) Other examples for words that express or are related to time: 本日 今日 昨日（さくじつ） きのう 一昨日（いっさくじつ） 明日（みょうにち） あした 明後日（みょうごにち） あさって 昨夜（さくや） 昨日の夜 or 昨夜（ゆうべ） 後日（ごじつ） 明日以降 本年 今年 昨年（さくねん） 去年 一昨年（いっさくねん） おととし 明年 来年 先日・週日 この間 当日 その日 このたび・このほど 今度 ただいま いま 先程 さっき 後ほど あとで 間もなく もうすぐ 以前 前に さっそく すぐに Etc… 4 persons have voted this message useful | |
