After having read a lot about LingQ I decided to register. Even if I have studied the language recently, I set my level to Beginner 1 ("You can say and understand some words and phrases"), aiming for Beginner 2 ("You can travel and shop, and talk about familiar subjects").
So far I have read a lot more than necessary to move up one level, listened close to what's suggested, but I haven't written anything at all, and my spoken Russian has consisted of occasional shadowing of the audio. I never knew that my vocabulary was as large as the system says it is. The vocabulary is based on the texts you read, minus the words you dont "know" (you add those to your personal collection). During the past two months I've read an Easy Reader, "Тамань" (Михаил Юрьевич Лермонтов), said to be suitable for someone with a vocabulary of around 1000 words. I had to look up words all the time. Time for an update.
Since late summer I've mainly used LingQ for my Russian studies. Back then, I aimed for Beginner 2 and I have done a lot more than the "activity targets" suggested (although my speaking and writing skills aren't the best). I have read and listened more than I think I ever would have done. Moreover, I had no idea that I had a semi-passive vocabulary of ~4000 words - still not much in a world of polyglots, but seeing the number made me smile. I've started to keep better track of what I do, and for how long. No major plans for this year, except for improving the skills. Nearly two years since the last update.
What did I do in 2008? I read this Easy Reader again ("Тамань" by Михаил Юрьевич Лермонтов). I did some L-R with the audiobook "Пелагия и белый бульдог" (by Boris Akunin/Борис Акунин) and the corresponding English translation "Pelagia and the White Bulldog". I have read other Akunin books in Swedish, and thought that this was going to be my kind of story, but not. I was too unfocused both of the times I listen-read it, and to this date I can't give a decent summary of it, even in Swedish. I also read a lot of online content at LingQ (who knows, maybe 100 000 words?). I used the Assimil content for additional listening/shadowing. ...and what did I do in 2009?
I kept using LingQ as my daily contact with Russian. In addition to that, I turned to my old textbooks which I read silently/aloud: "Intensivryska" (by Erik Fält - this was the book I used when I learned Russian the "first" time, in 1998), "Po-russki: rysk nybörjarkurs i radio" (by Sven Wahlström), Teach Yourself Russian (Maximilian Fourman, 1956; new print of the fourth edition from 1954, the first was published in 1943). I also began to slog through "Russian in Exercises" (by S. A. Khavronina) which has a lot of very good exercises for most grammar topics I'll ever use. Some statistics: LingQs Created: 10538 (words/phrases that I've saved) LingQs Learned: 7884 (words/phrases that I've learned over time) Hours of Listening: 462.2 Words of Reading: 60 298 (the LingQ tool counts words in the texts you read, so my books aren't included here) I chatted with a friend on MSN, and I submitted a text for correction at LingQ. Spreadsheet stats: Listening: 466 hours (I must have forgotten to put the extra hours into LingQ) Reading: 11.5 hours Analysis: 8.75 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 6 hours Total: 492.25 hours Average: 81 minutes/day My Russian is not active at all. Time for a late update.
I was lazy in 2010. I didn't go through the textbooks as intended, nor did I L-R Little Prince. LingQ was still my main source of content, although I was too unfocused (it seems as if I stuck to Russian for nostalgical reasons). I think I leafed through "Russian in Exercises" (by S. A. Khavronina) but nothing more. Not even an easy reader. Last year, I didn't do much in any of my profile languages. Russian was no exception. Spreadsheet stats: Listening: 80,5 hours Reading: 6,75 hours Analysis: 0 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 0 hours Total: 87,25 hours Average: 14 minutes/day No movies, no books, nothing really. My spreadsheet from 2013 says that reading was the only thing I did in Russian, and for the impressive 4 hours...
During the last months of 2013 I went back to some old study material and adapted readers: Intensivryska (Erik Fält) Азбука по Хармсу / Антология песен группы Кино (Åke Zimmerman, ISSN 1654-1057; 2) Desiat novell = Ten novels (A. P. Chekhov, ISBN 5-86013-001-5) Povesti Belkina (Alexander Pushkin, 5-86203-005-8) In mid-December I started with Ангелы и демоны (Dan Brown). The reading goes very slow. I can read Cyrillic, and I usually read fast, but now it doesn't work. Or rather, I don't have enough experience of reading real literature, so while I see the words "immediately" I can't read a page as quickly as in Swedish/English. It might also be a question of size (it's a relatively small edition) and typeface. Anyway, I won't give up! After all, I've read it before in Swedish (and Spanish), and what's best - there are three more Dan Brown novels in Russian at my library. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
