Now that you have some vague idea what �listening-reading� is, you can go a step (a giant�s leap in fact) further.
You can learn a few languages at a time from scrap. What you need: 1. parallel multilingual texts of the same novel Here�s a sample: www.stultorum.pochta.ru/aaaa/Miss_Stokrotka_slodka_poliglotk a.rar 2. all the texts should be recorded by professional actors What you do: 1. �listening-reading� in each language, STEP 1 and 2 (see the thread about �listening-reading�) 2. you listen to ALL THE RECORDED TEXTS AT THE SAME TIME FOCUSING YOUR ATTENTION ON ONE LANGUAGE BUT WITHOUT TURNING OFF THE REST It might seem weird at first, but you get used to it in no time (after a few hours). 3. you listen to all the recorded texts at the same time shifting your attention from one to another 4. you repeat after the recordings shifting your attention from one language to another. I experimented with SIX languages, I thought I was in paradise. PS You can learn quite a lot about HUMAN NATURE, while preparing parallel texts: 1. CENSORSHIP � ubiquitous, but North Americans excel in it. The funniest I�ve seen so far was a censored version of �1984� by Orwell (in Spanish). 2. Bungling and cheating: I even once saw �Crime and Punishment� by Dostoyevsky with the label �complete and unabridged� on the cover and I bought it. Then at home I couldn�t believe my eyes, I checked against the Russian original: at least one third of the text was missing. The same applies to �unabridged� audiobooks. How does this method compare, time-wise, to one language at a time, for time needed to gain a working knowledge of the languages?
Did you edit the audio so that sentences roughly corresponded, timewise? If not, how did you deal with them going out of sync, and finding your place in the parallel text as you switched languages? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

It would be good if they were synchronized, but it is not necessary.
When you've done Step 1 and 2 properly (a few times if necessary), you'll know the story almost by heart. More about it in the sample. It's in Polish, but I do not see why we should not be put at an equal disadvantage: I've learned English, you learn Polish. Think and experiment, don't trust anybody. Has anyone used the method to the extent that they claim that their success stems from it?
When I watch a TV show with subtitles, I understand a lot less of the spoken dialogue than when I turn off the subtitles. There is only so much the brain will absorb at once. In other words, this wouldn't work for me, but I'm wondering if it's actually been effective for anyone. 1 person has voted this message useful |
