Hey guys. Manuel here. I wanted to know the titles of some higher budget Spanish movies (precisely, movies in which the characters are and speak Spanish). Reason being and simply put, I've been a Spanish learner for 4 years. I did it because I had to in high school, but now I realize the importance and have been avidly trying to learn for the past year (roughly).
I went to the store (FYE) to pick up some hispanic movies, and went to the foregin section. I mostly found these low budget and cheap looking comedies. Nothings wrong with those, as I'm sure they could help me to a certain extent. I'm just not sure what the quality of the subtitles would be, and if they would a) match what was actually being said in Spanish and b) if the dvds would hold my attention, as I'm not very interested in comedy.
Having said all of that, here is my question (or questions). Is the hispanic movie industry very successful? If so, where could I find more higher budget quality Spanish films, such as Pan's Labyrinth? <--- This film is the only Spanish movie I know of that actually seems to match the cinematic quality of American movies. And after telling me this, could you all give me a list of the names of movies? Or just a resource by which I could find them myself. I really appreciate it.

I really liked this one movie Timecrimes that is in "Spain Spanish". It's a psychological thriller type film. Pretty high quality. There aren't a lot of special effects like "Pan's Labyrinth" but it is as high quality as any American movie. I don't know where you could buy it but it was on Netflix's Watch Instantly and that's how I saw it.

Also "En la Cama" is a great movie filmmed in Argentina that has great Spanish dialogue if you are looking to learn Spanish..(remember subtitles are not word for word translation)......buena suerte!

I think you really need to tell us what sort of films your after. There's a whole host of good Spanish cinema in various genres. It's never "big budget" in Hollywood terms, though. For that reason, you're unlikely to find any "effects vehicle" films -- they leave that to the US. chm*rnsfrmrs*cmh.
If you like Pan's Labyrinth, try looking for other stuff by Guillermo Del Toro -- he works in Hollywood in order to finance his Spanish language stuff. The Devil's Backbone is excellent.
Other films I'd personally recommend:
Open Your Eyes/Abre Los Ojos. (Although you'll know the story if you've already seen Vanilla Sky.)
800 Bullets/800 Balas. A western set in the modern day, in a western theme park in south-western Spain. Yes, it's as messed-up as it sounds.
The Motorcycle Diaries/Diarios de Motocicleta. You must have heard of this one.

Here you are some top lists of movies made in Spain:
Thriller
Intriga
Comedia
Try FilmAffinity to find more, but I'm afraid you won't find the level of quality you expect.

Netflix has a decent selection of Spanish language movies that you can watch streamed.
