'Al otro lado' is great - Mexican, Cuban and Spain Spanish all in one film. 'Amores Perros' for your Mexican slang or just about anything with Gael Garcia or Diego Luna in it will be good or at least moderately interesting. 'Nicotina' is another good one.

Nueve Reinas (Nine Queens) is a great crime thriller with a good twist at the end.

Here is a great one for you "Maria full of Grace" It is a great film but here is the added bonus it has Spanish and English sustitles!(very rare to find) This is a great way to blast the language in your brain from different angles! It speeds learning(at least it does for me) ...alternate the subtitles in your viewing..

Paz Vega is the same actress who took part in The Spirit cast.....a very hot Spaniard....I downloaded "Lucia y el Sexo" last week....I can't wait to check it out soon....and if she really "did well" in the movie.

Look for movies by Pedro Almodovar (Spain). I like "All About My Mother" (Todo Sobre Mi Madre) and "Talk To Her" (Hable Con Ella). Both are well done and certainly aren't comedies. As mentioned earlier I also recommend Maria Full of Grace (Maria, Llena Eres de Gracia). It's interesting hearing the Colombian Spanish in Maria Full of Grace. Usted is used even between friends and family.

I guess I'm in a similar situation as the threadstarter. I've been searching for Spanish films but they are rather hard to find in Poland. On the other hand, I don't follow the news about what appears on the screens, so I suppose I must have overlooked quite a lot.
I guess I'll take a look and search for the films you've mentioned so far.

I would also like to ask your opinion about the usefulness of Spanish-dubbed films because I have resorted to watching them in the absence of the originally Spanish-language output. However, I suppose that this is not exactly the same when it comes to such matters as e.g propunciation.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos is an Argentinian film that won the Foreign Film Oscar this year. I loved it and have seen it about 4 times now. Quality production.

Also, a second vote from me for Fresa y Chocolate. One of my favourite films ever! Not a big budget blockbuster but that's what makes it so quaint and lovable.
