"These are not available on DVD in the USA due to region encoding and many have no
captions. However, I need captions for learning."
Is it not possible to buy a region free dvd player or region free dvds? Surely that
would do the trick.

RE: Region encoding...
I had a lot of fun learning french vocabulary by watching DVDs on my MacBook, which I use as a Region 2 DVD player. Of course, subtitles don't usually match the dubbing (two different translations). I've even downloaded the subtitles from websites and read them separately (I read .srt files with Stanza).

Are the downloaded subs more accurate to the dialog?

They're a more literal translation, yes. The closest match I've ever seen between french dubbing and subtitles is the HBO series Band of Brothers (Frères d'armes). But they usually diverge quite noticeably, even having tutoyer in one and vouvoyer in the other.

So, French subs are available for popular TV shows too?
So, the best thing to do is get the video, set it to French audio track and download the subs while disregrding the DVD subs?
Also, how do the subs correspond on actual native French productions?

This is what I did:
I'm a big fan of LOST. So I got the DVDs from Amazon.fr and initially I had English audio and french subs (I was a beginner then). Afterwards I watched with french audio and french subs. Then I figured out that I could get the subs from websites and study them before watching. But I still have the french subtitles on for TV shows and movies because my listening comprehension isn't perfect.
I've learned a lot of synonyms this way, because the subs on the DVD are sometimes different from the subs from opensubtitles.org and of course they're both different from the dubbing.
Of course, with an original french production the subs match the dialog word for word.

I'm not sure abou that. Many movies on TV5Monde that have French subs seem abreviated versions of the on scren dialog. It is extremely annoying for learning.
