I just came across an article that mentioned http://www.memrise.com/.
I've just started to learn Japanese and I see that not only is it covered but there seem
to be quite a few "community contributed" vocabulary lists and lessons.
I've played with the site for about 30 minutes now and it seems quite reasonable.
Does anyone have more experience with it? Do you know at what point they'll want me to
start paying :-)

They send much less emails than for exemple frenchpod101 (horrible spammer) or lingq, so no worries. And you can turn most off, I believe.
A few weeks ago, I wrote quite a lot about memrise, which I had just found by then, in my log. I'll just give you a link since I have no energy to rewrite or quote it all. It's the last but one post on first page and a more detailed post is first on the second page of the thread
http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?T ID=30405&PN=0&TPN=2
I hope it'll be useful.

And I forgot some news from memrise. They have recently done a survey and it seems the authors' plans are to keep the site free but add payed functions, such as downloadable phone app usable offline.

Thanks. I did search the forum before starting a new post, next time I'll make sure that
I search post contents and not just titles :-)
So far memrise seems to be working quite well for me (and no spammy emails yet).

Having asked, I think it's only fair that I report back.
So far the only emails I get are of the "your memories are fading, come water your
plants" variety. I consider those to be a useful prod :-) but they can be disabled
under the account settings.
It's also twice asked me if I'd like to tweet about memrise (or mention it on FB), but
that's trivially skipped.
It seems that all the courses are downloadable (at least for the ones I've looked at).
Although I've not tried this, I presume it wouldn't be too hard to pour them into Anki
(or similar).
Overall, it looks good so far, seems to have a healthy community and I don't feel that
I'm risking anything by playing along.

IMO seems pretty good especially for reluctant learners. My little sister is only 11 but
has already learned 500+ Hanzi in a couple of weeks. The way they present the learned
cards, with flowers and faces is very appealing for her. It makes it into a very
addictive game, similar to farmville on Facebook or something.
