In France for many years there was a litterary weekly TV show called 'Apostrophe' ran by Bernard Pivot. The host invited 5 or 6 writers, each who should have read the others' books, and they talked about their books for one hour. Amazing show, it was hugely popular and really increased the reading of contemporary litterature by the general population, people who otherwise would not have read so many books. Sometimes he would go and visit writers in their homes, some really important people in this narrow field (contemporary litterature in French) such as Marguerite Yourcenar or Albert Cohen.

Do you know of similar TV shows in other countries?

I know the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) hosts an event called Canada Reads every year in which a famous person (most writers) would defend the work of another author, many of them bestsellers of the year.

TV5 has a small "time-fillers" called something like Un livre par jour (A book a day) where an author is interviewed about his/her latest books. Not always interesting though, I'm afraid.

Probably the closest US program I can think of is BookNotes, www.booknotes.org">www.booknotes.org on the CSPAN network. A lot
of the episodes are streamed from their website. The normal format is a one
hour interview with an author talking about a book of current public interest.
CSPAN was set up mostly to broadcast sessions of the US Congress, so
BookNotes is heavy on the political books rather than literature.

A related resource is www.booktv.org

On German TV there is a TV discussion program about litterature called "LITERARISCHES QUARTETT" which four experts of litterature discussing novels. The most famous expert in this "Quartett" is Marcel Reich-Ranicki who in Germany also called "der Literaturpapst".

In Italy there’s a dearth of TV shows about books. One of the few ones still broadcast is Per un pugno di libri on Rai 3. Old episodes are available for streaming on the programme website:

http://www.perunpugnodilibri.rai.it/

It’s a weekly 50-minute game show in which two teams made up of final-year high-school students compete answering questions about both literature in general and about one literary classic in particular which is the theme of each episode. Every year there are changes in the rules of the game (for instance, there used to be celebrities—mainly actors and journalists—playing with the teams; and they used to read only books by dead authors—which is no longer the case: last season they also read Gomorra) so I don’t know how the new season starting in a couple of weeks will turn out.

La7 too has a similar ‘time-filler’ called Due minuti un libro. Some episodes can be viewed here:

(Please delete the blank in the link).

It’s not a TV show, but BBC Radio 4 periodically broadcasts A Good Read. In each episode the host and two guests (usually writers or other personalities in the cultural scene) each suggest a favourite book which is then discussed by the entire panel. They don’t discuss the latest releases, but books already available in paperback.
