Russian vs Japanese - difficulty? | ||

Hmm, maybe I should dive into Japanese to provide an "objective" perspect into this discussion, as I am not a native Japonic nor IE speaker. In Russian expression the exceptions are hardest for me, the grammar not so much. If Japanese has more grammar but less exceptions I'll likely find it easier, but who knows.

If Japanese had an easy alphabetical writing system, then it would be much easier than

For an Italian or English native speaker, Japanese ist definitely _not_ easier than Russian. It's much harder - regardless of the Chinese characters.

I am and I can attest to the difficulty of Japanese. The writing system certainly adds to the learning experience, but even without that, pretty much everything about Japanese is different. I've never tried Russian. The extensive case system and verb conjugations sound tricky. However, Italian has cases and plenty of irregular verbs and English is full of little exceptions (even though the verbs themselves are fairly straightforward). So Russian sounds like it would be just much more of the same. I am interested in trying Russian out, so maybe I'll pop back here in ten years time with a more considered opinion. But right now my money's on Japanese winning the "difficulty" stakes. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
