There's an interesting article in today's NYT The Elusive Pleasures of French TV Series ‘Spiral’ and 3 Other French Shows Worth Seeking Out

NYT wrote:
... “Spiral,” a French crime series originally called “Engrenages,” is a huge hit in France, as well as on BBC Four in Britain, and it has found a devout American following on Netflix, which offers the first three seasons. But beyond “Spiral,” there are excellent French series that are almost inaccessible to American viewers, and for no good reason.

“Un Village Français” is a period drama about a village under Nazi occupation. “Maison Close” is a drama set in a 19th-century Parisian bordello — Baudelaire meets the Playboy Channel. “Les Revenants” is a matter-of-fact ghost story about a handful of people who return from the dead and try to resume normal life in a small French town. ...

Hmmm, maybe I should start learning French...

I saw that article - it was a nice write up. And then I went looking for a way, any way,
to find those shows.

And I failed. Engrenage is on Netflix, but you have to go to eBay or Amazon.fr to
get the others, for around US $50 to $100 per season, and the dvd's would still be coded
Region 2.

It's similar to the ebook frustrations from the other thread. There are so many resources
out there that you just can't have.

Cool, I will try them with my boyfriend. He is trying to learn French and I think he might be ready for native material without subtitles.

twopossums, it considered against the rules to post such links :-(

But yes, pirate sources are the only way to get most resources.

Kanewai, it is easy (and legal) to get most DVD players reset to region 0, which means they will play any disc. Since the players are usually made in a factory in one country and shipped all over the world, it is usually a simple thing. I always buy Philips DVD players because the region can be set with the remote control on all of their players.

Living in England, I have TV5Monde on Sky TV. But they seem to show mostly second rate series, and I usually only discover them when they are nearly finished. Thankfully, most of the better shows have optional subtitles.

For those who'd like to learn more about these series, here are SensCritique links for each show, with reviews in French, and links to various places that sell the DVDs.

Engrenages
Un Village français
Maison close
Les Revenants

I've seen a season or so of Engrenages. It's relatively difficult by the standards of French TV, and the subs have little relation to the dialog. If you like bloody crime dramas with lots of corruption, it might be your thing, but to me, it always feels a little bit like a second-tier HBO or AMC show—it's dark and cynical, but it never quite manages to be brilliant. Maybe I'm still missing some nuances, however.

Episode 1 of Les Revenants was well-done: They took the premise seriously, and hinted at an interesting (and creepy) story. This feels like one of those shows that will need a strong arc and tight writing if it's going to actually pay off.

If you have ipad, you can get FrenchTV app which will give you access to more French channels, even though not the "best" ones. There are movies and tvseries at some but I never bothered to find something to watch before hand. I hate tv, you are supposed to make time when they show what you want to see. Totally twisted and old approach :-D
