I whole heartedly second "Un village Français", the characters are deep and when things go wrong for them
you really feel their pain. I was shocked when I found it because I didn't think the French could make
interesting non-comedic TV.
Will definitely check out those other ones, thanks for the post.

Interesting topic, though I was really expecting to see mention of "Braquo," a French police drama that Hulu has been promoting a lot here in the US. It looks like you can watch the first two seasons on Hulu for free. No idea if it's actually any good, but they bill it as "the French 'Wire'" so hopefully it's decent at least. Looks like English subtitles only unfortunately.
They also seem to have the first season of Spiral as well!

English subtitles are still awesome, imagine it could be dubbing only.

I've been watching it. I find it outstanding. You can watch the first season for free on Hulu. If you want the 2nd season, you can use the paid version of Hulu. I'm not sure if it can be ordered on DVD.

I just found Les revenants and two seasons of Maison close on a French
streaming site.
This looks legitimate (and legal!). I haven't registered - I have a feeling it's
better that the site doesn't know I'm not in France.
I didn't see Un village or Kaamelott, though they do have lots of dubbed
American series.
I just watched the first episode of Les revenants, and I agree that it's very
well done. And addictive. I hope the writing stays tight the whole season. There are no
subtitles or captions, but I'm happy to report that it is much, much easier to follow
the dialogue in this series than in most French movies. I can understand most of what
the adults say, though not much of what the teenagers say.
Though maybe the kids are speaking zombie, which isn't one of my target languages
anyway.

I'm a bit late to this particular party, but I'm a big fan of Un Village Français and I happen to know that my mother in Sweden has been able to view the replay episodes without doing anything remotely morally questionable (such as going through a French proxy server). They're only available while the series is running, though, and only the last two episodes. I also doubt they're available in countries where someone has bought the rights to the show.
I read that France5 has just started airing the series from the beginning, but they don't seem to run the old episodes on replay yet, and I kind of doubt that they will since the DVDs are for sale and you can get it on VOD.

Thanks for the lead, eyðimörk! I found Un Village on France 3.
To watch it outside of French territories, install Hola on Chrome - this allows you to view the site through a French VPN. It's easy to use ... while on the site you want you click the "Hola" icon, and choose your country.
(and again, this is legal ... it has nothing to do with Uzbekistan).

I watch most of my TV in the US on the free Hulu site. (I don't currently pay for the access through Hulu Plus.) There is at least one French series on Hulu (Braquo) and perhaps more.
In fact, there are other series in other languages on the site all for free. I don't study Korean, but there are several great K-dramas. Last year I watched (and adored), Faith: The Great Doctor.
So those are some other options for you!
