What do you do about your anki decks when you're taking a long break?
I'll be travelling for six weeks with zero access to anki. I have no idea how I'll deal with my review cards when I get back! From what I've read, you can't "suspend" anki while you're on holiday. I have gave up learning Esperanto for a few months and when coming back to it, I had over a thousand due cards on Anki. I did a little over a hundred of them every day and did not add any new cards before I caught up with all the overdue cards.
It is however possible to suspend cards in Anki when you are in "browse items". 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Due to my bad habits, I deal with flood of cards more often than necessary (yes, I know it makes anki less efficient, of course I know). I have noticed a few things that help me handle them better:
1.no new cards until that disaster is dealt with :-) 2.no attempts to do the thousand + cards at once. Sure, it is possible but exhausting and doesn't make me feel like doing more tommorrow. 3.Setting for myself a number of reviews to do at once (usually something like 50-100) and I continue when I can. By doing several such doses a day, the pile disappears quite fast. 4.Mini prizes for reaching a part of the goal, a small piece of a movie or a few pages of a book usually do the job. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

If you have upgraded to Anki 2, you won't get more than 100 due cards no matter how long break you take.

It sounds like version 2 is the way to go. Any tool should be a good servant and not a
poor master. However, my bigger worry would be what can one do on such a trip to keep the language alive? Providing some sort of language source of course, whether that be books, audio (MP3) or whatever. But if you specifically want to practice vocab, and you don't have access to your usual tools? Then it's probably back to good old pen and paper: Word lists. Or "Gold Lists". OR: if you have a voice recorder of any sort: just record yourself saying the word, perhaps a few times, ideally as part of a phrase or sentence, with as much information about it as you think you need to store (e.g. gender, or any special grammatical notes). Not true. I have Anki 2 and it does have no trouble going over 1000 due cards. Perhaps there is a way to customize it but I haven't discovered it.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I'll see if I can change the default to 100. I also like the idea of just powering
through as many as I can in 15 minute blocks, and not adding any more words until I've cleared out the back-up.
No worries here! I'll be in Spain for six weeks - probably much more effective than practicing with my anki decks. ;) 1 person has voted this message useful |
