Thanks everyone for all your input- it's been really interesting to hear all the
different aspects that helped propel you forward on a personal level.

Would anyone be able to point me to any studies about these 'bridge' languages?

I finally found the idea I was searching for!

Asymmetric intelligibility e.g. where Dutch speakers find Afrikaans easier to understand
than the reverse because the simpler grammar of Afrikaans disadvantages comprehension in
the opposite direction.

Apologies for my earlier garbled attempts at trying to explain what I mean.
