Right now I'm just watching a soap opera (I don't think I could particularly recommend it, but it has so many episodes that it provides a lot of listening) and listening to podcasts online as well as reading. I decided to take a break from explicit grammar study because it was too much work for me to focus on everything. I worked on grammar pretty hard in the last year, so now I'm using input to reinforce what I've already learned. I've really become a lot better at learning vocabulary through context and I've mostly stopped writing down and reviewing. I did that a lot in the beginning, but I really wish I had the stamina to do Anki reviews because so many people have benefitted from them. By the way, in case you find that you're not an Anki person, the way to get around that is to read a lot--books, newspaper articles, instruction manuals etc.

Thanks...I like Anki very much which I discovered after using Supermemo for years. Reading is very important for me. It is my major activity both as work and pleasure. I guess I read 6 to 8 hours a day. So, reading will come in but not yet. I need to get to the 1000 hours first. I do not like going to the dictionary all the time. Currently, my focus is getting use to polish sounds and building up the vocabulary. I think that I will read Bielec's Grammar book, and make some Grammar Anki cards.

I clicked so far 23 hours. Another 578 to go. Better, 23 hours fewer to do!

3. Don't be discouraged by natives telling you how hard Polish is. Yes it
is, but in some ways (admittedly only some!) it's easier than English for
a non-native learner. Being a largely phonetic language is not an
insignificant mercy.

4. I use Anki and find it invaluable. Try to add simple phrases and
sentences to the words you collate, to illustrate declensions and
conjugations. I annotate my cards regularly.

5. Grammar tables can be simplified onto handy cards that you can keep by
your side for instant referral. You'll want to refer to the declensions
and conjugations as you read stuff, without having to waste time digging
around books. Check out Iversen's v=S9qW6jN_uOg">'Green Sheets' idea.

6. Reading will reinforce the grammar you know, and sensitise you to
unfamilar concepts, but you'll still have to study grammar explicitly and
do drills. Sorry!

7. Use your wife! Do you talk to her in Polish? I realise that learning
from a spouse or family member has the potential to strain relationships
(like my Dad trying to teach me to drive!), but suitable opportunities
are worth maximising.

8. Don't forget to enjoy it! There's an abundance of great music,
literature, caberet, theatre.....and cheesecake...waiting for you to dive
in!
