Hello all! Based on the ACTFL scale, what proficiency do you think would be required to pursue a meaningful,
intimate relationship with another person? I'm learning Spanish for example. What level should I be able to
speak at before I attempted to pursue a relationship with a woman who spoke little to no English?

You don't need any Spanish to attempt to pursue a relationship-- sure, it limits your options for strategies for
meeting people, and some will reject you outright for not sharing a language, but if you manage to establish an
attraction by being your hot nonverbal self, you can then share the experience of learning to communicate with
each other.

At that point you'll probably have to begin serious studying though, as it'll be hard for the relationship to get
really serious unless you can talk at high Intermediate level. The stage where you don't yet share a language can
only get you so far, right?

I don't think it's necessary to get to the really highest level (Superior). If the relationship really goes serious
and long-term, you'll talk to each other enough that your level in conversational language within the topics you
talk to each other about will eventually get really high. It doesn't matter if you're missing other language skills
like reading comprehension, vocabulary relating to things you would never talk to each other about, or
understanding variants that she doesn't use.

As the wise old men of Rammstein said:

Sie rief mir Worte ins Gesicht
Die Zunge Lust gestreut
Verstand nur ihre Sprache nicht
Ich hab es nicht bereut

From my personal experience, at B1 level (CEFR; I'm not familiar with ACTFL) it's possible but not easy. Serious conversations can be difficult. B2 would be a lot more comfortable.

Is this woman still going to be around by the time you've learned Spanish?

Given that some people marry without sharing a language... you only need to be proficient in Google Translate and body language.

I'm not just starting the language learning process. I tested advanced-low in oral Spanish this time last year. I
participate in a hispanic church and am pretty integrated into the Hispanic community here. The question was
meant to be more of a general question rather than about me and my particular circumstance.

I think a high B2 is more than enough to maintain a meaningful friendship. Maybe the language of love is more forgiving and floats along on B1.

Will she also be learning or improving her English? My wife is from Germany and I supposed I didn't need to learn German as we live in the UK and she already spoke fluent English when I met her. But I sure as hell didn't want to feel like an idiot when we went to visit her family and friends in her homeland.
