French: Keeping my spoken French sufficiently activated so that I can have intelligent adult conversations about any topic of interest at a moment's notice. I'm increasingly convinced that this is annoyingly difficult for somebody who lives outside the Francophony.

Egyptian: Assimil + Anki MCDs rocks, but making cards is a drag.

Spanish: No roadblocks at all. For now, it feels more like an Olympic luge.

Intermediate-level Blues! I am able to have fun with French now that I am in an intermediate level -- I can
read and watch film/TV viewers series (mostly with subtitles) and listen to news! However, seeing
improvement at this stage is so slow compared to beginning levels! In fact, getting to this level has
highlighted in many ways how steep the climb going forward is! it seems there is a lot of hours put in without
too much measurable progress! Too top it off, wanderlust is rearing its head, but I feel I need to get my
French level higher before starting another language.

This is pretty spot on! My passive skills in Russian have gotten to be quite good
(compared to when I arrived in Russia a couple months ago with just four previous
semesters under my belt) and now it's hard to see progress. Sometimes I'll read a
paragraph in a newspaper and feel great that I understood just about all of it and
then I'll miss a word, but then I am too lazy to look up the meaning of that
particular word.

Motivation and intimidation.

I've really been wanting to learn Mandarin or Japanese for awhile now, but after reading about how long it's taken some people to get to a certain stage it just feels too daunting to undertake.

Well, you can be intimidated five years from now, or you can be five years closer to your goal in Mandarin or Japanese. :)

And some really do learn faster than others, and me I'm also massively distracted by work.   Don't base your own expectations on what those of us slugging away for years experience.

looking for a translation of this : (thx)
