I'm one of the "and what do you want me to say?" people. I hate the situation. Really.
Last time it happend, it was my boyfriend who asked me before his whole family. So a
potentially embarassing situation. I got out of it somehow with "what do you want me to
say", which I spread over several sentences, I think I included the "I hate this
question" part somehow.
I like Jeffers' version.

If you are of the crowd who don't mind the question or don't want to respond dismissively, how about going with
the appropriate translation of "My hovercraft is full of eels" ?
'My hovercraft is full of eels' in most languages

I think robarb's version is safer than the one of Jeffers. Somebody in the room might understand French.
Personally I don't get so many requests to say something in weird languages that I need to have preestablished defense mechanisms. My linguistic interests have been noted at my job and in my travel club, but it seems that people just expect me to have weird hobbies. And those in my travel club will be confirmed in this idea when they read the latest issue of our Club Magazine, where I have a modest contribution in which I present some of the features of the Irish language in simple terms (not on the internet yet).
