If you look through any regular bookstore, you'll see "Spanish Made Simple" "German in 90 Days" etc. And I have a variety of these types of books that I'm currently working through, hoping to finish them by the end of 2015.

What would you normally expect your language level to be when you finish this type of book? A comfortable A1? Would you expect to be A2?

If you're an English speaker learning Spanish or German, you'll come out at a higher level than if you go through
a book in an opaque language like Japanese.

If you only use the book, which I don't recommend, you could probably expect to come out at about A1. The
books cover much more grammar than you need at that level, but with so little input and no practice, I wouldn't
expect to reach a higher level.

If you supplement the book (which is good at explanations and covers all the basics of grammar) with an input-
based method (something like L-R or Assimil or Lingq), it should be more effective. They'll cover each other's
weaknesses, and A2-B1 would be reached more quickly.

But for a first "opaque" language, it can take some time and additional support to break into it, and I wouldn't be
surprised if a book alone would be totally impenetrable. My eyes just glaze over looking at a textbook in an
unfamiliar script, which is why I start with audio lessons.
