Presuming you've already committed the words to memory (so to speak)...
When you're doing review, do you just look at the word in your familiar language and then try to translate it to your target language?
Or do you do both directions? |

I have coloured card flash cards, which I take on the train with me. I get about 90% accurate. I always start with the Spanish first, and try and guess the English. On the return journey, I reverse the order.

I only do select flashcards in both directions. Fullrecall makes it easy to do.

When I used flashcards, I did both directions because I couldn't remember them if I didn't. But I don't use flashcards anymore. I think they are a BAD IDEA. Learn words in context! I know flashcards may be more useful for languages with more complicated writing systems, but as for Latin alphabets, I don't see the point anymore.

The admin says it's fine to make cards just out of ordinary paper by handwriting. Yes, but it seems not very good to bring the cards out while when, for example, travelling on bus (easily go missing/ not very durable). I've considered drawing cards for a couple of days, but now conclude that, as Louche says, it's better to learn words in context.
I believe that flashcards are still useful in some ways. Perhaps flashcards are more important for Chinese learners whose default alphabet is, say, Latin. The same for Japanese kana.

I want to start creating a flashcard database via Anki, and this is an area of confusion for me. Would most people agree that doing them NL>TL is best? I've already made my first 60 TL>NL. :\
Do you think someone should do it a certain way if they are just starting out in the language? Or should it be the same for all learners? I consider myself just below an intermediate level.
Thanks. Love this forum.

Typically speaking, most around here would call NL>TL "active", meaning that they are best suited to production (speaking and writing), whereas TL>NL would be "passive", meaning better suited for listening and reading.
I personally think both are good, but I think ultimately it depends on what you are trying to achieve,

Thank you for your reply.
If someone wants to be proficient at speaking, writing, listening, and reading, should that person just make double the flashcards and have every one of them in both directions?
