The one that annoys me the most is "definately" instead of "definitely".

Hehe, I made that one wrong for years, always thinking "definately" was the proper spelling.

Oh my god, Im SO sorry that I did that. I must have not been thinking...

I do correct myself all the time, so I guess I just didn't notice at the time.

This might just be one of those points where non-natives are at an advantage in relation to native speakers. We had to learn these things more formally, and had to rely on the rules initially.

Do any others find this annoying?

Absolutely. Seeing "to" instead of "too" drives me mad, and I see it all the time. "definately" is irritating too, as are many of the others mentioned above.

Hi, I used to get stuck on such things, but my English teacher gave me a very simple guide to follow…

"You’re" is a contraction of "you are." If you’ve written, "you’re" try substituting "you are." If it doesn’t work, the correct word is "your"

This isn’t intended for anyone here, but just a useful guide that can be passed on to the unknowing.

Steve.

What's funny is that when I encounter "you're" used incorrectly, my mind begins re-reading the sentence, substituting "you are" for "you're". Yet it doesn't do this when it's used correctly. I have no idea why I do that! (Well, actually I do: because my mind thinks it's funny. Now that I don't understand. ;))

By the way, one of my favorite expressions on the internet is "your a moron" (and the like). It always gives me a laugh to see such things written in all seriousness.

Misplaced apostrophes annoy me as well. But we all make mistakes. I'm particularly bad when typing an essay or something. Even when I know that what I have written is incorrect, I still type it.
