Anyway, as has been mentioned, I think individual personalities have to be considered above all else. I don't see anything wrong with making general observations about gender groups as a whole, but sweeping generalizations can't be applied to individual people. |

I couldn't agree with you more, as a female and obsessed language learner. I know quite a few women who love learning languages, as well as men, outside of this forum. The minute I start thinking about who does it better, I get stuck. I really couldn't say without generalizing, and then I'd be wrong.
Also, I prefer the word "passionate" over "obsessed", though. It has a more positive ring to it. :)

I think you're right, Cait-- "passionate" does sound a lot better, doesn't it? =D

Both common knowledge and linguistic research confirm my personal observations as a language teacher that, as a general whole, women are better students of languages than men. However, almost all those who become obsessed with learning languages are men. Why is this? Am I wrong? Are there any lady members of this forum? |

I agree.
At University of Pisa the 82% of the students of foreign languages are females. But the best and more passionate students are males.

It depends on the what the general observations are, although I agree that whatever they are, they shouldn't be applied to individuals.

My guess is that more men are more likely to be geeky and end up on a fourm like this? Geeky obsessiveness to be excessively excellent might be another trait that could be manifesting here.

I've noticed that other boards that I've visited are dominated by men as well so I think for whatever reason that is, it also affects this board.
As far as which sex studies languages more, I notice more women pursuing them. I'd have to say though, that it seems men are more likely to follow through and reach a higher level of proficiency in the language than women.

I truly have no idea how you can make this claim! I have so many observations that show the opposite, but the point is, until you have some kind of scientific fact - can either side be proven? - I just don't see how such generalizations are even helpful to anyone.
