I just visited the Assimil site and each of the programs listed for English learners is the new series. The old series was called "Without Toil" and the new is called "With Ease."
I have two of the "with ease" programs and I would recommend them. If you want the old "without toil" series you can usually find them on ebay. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think with Assimil method we can reach a B2 level(Council of Europe)or 3+ level ( ILR). The vocabulary is about 3.500 words with the first level (sans peine) and about 2.000 words more with the perfectionement level.
We can begin with Pimsleur I,II,III ( A2 level or 1+ ILR) and then Assimil. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

A question for curiousity.
In the Assimil courses for the laguages which are not written in Latin alphabets, are the books written directly in those languages or is it "translated" to latin alphabets? There are some languages of which the writing system is so different from French, for example, Tamil, Hindi, Japanese and Korean. Even for Greek or those languages using Cyrillic alphabets, learning them directly through the own alphabet is quite difficult at the beginning. In Russian (Assimil) there is an introduction with
exercises for learning the alphabet. Then in a few units you have a transcription with the dialogues, in Cyrillic. The same in Arabic. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

In the Assimil course for Serbo-Croat (which uses both alphabets), the first half is in Latin script and the other in Cyrillic.

For assimil hindi, it uses both alphabets, but at the second "wave" or "active", only in the devanagari alphabet.
