Interesting blog of simultaneous interpreter, though it seems to be mostly in German, with some articles in French.

(Edited as I had some trouble with the hyperlink, though it seems to work now)

The blog's most useful feature is Lerntipps ("tips for learning") which has the blog owner Caroline Elias' views on learning. She favours, for example, learning five words a day and prefers to write them on small index cards. Writing them as opposed to relying on pre-printed cards is for her part of the learning process.

Good find. The scary thing is, that two decades or so after she started, and presumably at the top of her profession, the amount of time she seems to devote to keeping her languages fresh and active and up to date.

I forget the source, but someone once said or wrote that simultaneous interpretation is rather like being under examination conditions all the time. So Elias probably has to keep working on her languages, learning technical vocabulary etc.

To be honest, there is not a single day I don't try to practice my working languages. Not all of them at the same time, of course. But I actually practice using basic vocabulary as well. I think that using the language is really important. You need to read and speak it. Reading is important because you need to be able to quickly grasp the gist of a document if you are provided with papers in preparation for a conference. Listening and comprehension skills are vital for interpreters. Fortunately, in this day and age it is very easy to practice your languages with all the modern media available. Time, however, is a limiting factor. So, I guess you need to set priorities.

Elias's photo of two pages from one of her vocabulary notebooks was what particularly drew me to link to this from her blog. The relevant item is dated November 13, 2011, under Vokabelheft.
