I just found this site: LyricsTraining.com.

It's for people who want to improve their language knowledge through music. The concept is that you watch a music video of a song in your target language while typing some or all of the lyrics that you hear. You can select Beginner mode (10% of the lyrics are missing and you need to fill them in), Intermediate mode (same thing except 25% is missing) or Expert ("simultaneous translation" mode, where you type the entire lyric as you hear it).

The set-up of the site is quite impressive on first glance. It's organized as a game, where your number of correct words plus speed gives you a score at the end. I "played" a couple of "games" and really enjoyed it. It took me a little while to get used to the typing interface (it moves you to the next word even if you don't press space, and diacriticals are optional), but basically it's very user-friendly and pretty fun! A nice feature is that they don't let the song get ahead of you – if you're not typing fast enough to keep up (who could anyway, on some of the faster songs?), the video automatically pauses until you've caught up, and then continues again, without you needing to press "pause" or "play."

The currently offered languages are English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and German. The music selection is pretty cool – I just did Johnny Halliday and Cheb Khaled for French, and the Wise Guys and Die Ärzte for German. One of the videos I encountered had a problem where it wouldn't play all the way through, but I haven't had that problem again yet.

This is basically the method I used to get up to about an A2 in German, only without the organized format that this site offers, so I'm awfully pleased to see that someone's made this resource available for language-learners who, like me, learn best through music.

If you're interested, go make a free account and try it out, and let me know what you think. I only just discovered it myself, but I think I'm going to be a big fan.

Jinx, you rock!!! I've been learning Portuguese primarily because I like Brazilian music so much. Just like you, I have used music to help with vocabulary and listening. When I was learning Spanish, Rubén Blades, Albita, Hector Lavoe, Célia Cruz and Willy Chirino helped me to progress.

This is a lot of fun! Thanks, Jinx!
