Can anyone recommend any good free websites/online resources for learning a language
independently (without any formal classes/immersion)?

Which language?

The available resources vary depending on the language, and most of them are specific to only one language. In other words, the answer for learning Romanian will be completely different from the answer for learning Greek.

This curriculum from Deutsche Welle has been highly praised from a very credible polyglot acquaintance of mine, and he says it's one of the only courses available online that can truly bring a beginner to near fluency in a language, although I personally have not tried it:

Deutsche Welle

He just advises to stay away from the "Radio D" section.

A nice, albeit short, collection of videos teaching German, with a very consistent structure:

Deutsch Online Lernen

Some other links, all starting at the beginner level, that progress to varying levels of difficulty:

101 Languages
BYKI (downloadable program for offline use)
FSI
Goethe Verlag
Linguanaut
BBC course
Wikibooks textbook

Once you have a solid foundation of vocabulary and grammatical structure, here's some good practice for listening comprehension:

Easy German

Enjoy. :)

Deutsche Welle is a very good source for learners of German. I use their news - they
provide transcripts for news in audio. This server has a lot of other materials, e.g.
Top Thema - short texts with audio, the vocabulary in it above some level is explained
in German, also very good. When I read and look up the vocabulary on a day, I can
usually very good understand the TV news on ARD (also on the internet, Tagesschau),
beacuse the news are very similar.

DW provides much more material, I can strongly recommend this site.

Deutsche Welle taught me a GREAT deal, truly, it's such an invaluable tool. I was quite, quite stricken with sadness when I listened to the last DW-Radio show just a few weeks ago.

Start listening to it as early as possible, all the time.
