About 5 years ago I did a university course in pre calc that used ALEKS, which was software that did pretty much everything that Sprachprofi mentioned, expect for the fact that the answers involved typing in the correct answer, so this meant no multiple choice or fill in the blank exercises. Was this method better than a textbook? Hard to say. I don't think there were Pimsleur-like algorithms for retesting knowledge gained, just periodic tests every week or so. This particular algorithm, especially for learning a language like Chinese, would probably be too advanced for a start up website.
If computational linguists at MIT can't do it, then it's probably safe to say that the technology is way off into the future. This doesn't mean, however, that you couldn't have practice tests based on the student's results. Ever hear of Dennett's new mantra, "competence without comprehension"? If the software didn't know why you answered the way you did, then it couldn't possibly explain why you were wrong.
