I am terribly sorry to have to inform you that Chih-Pien – Songlines to us fellow HTLALers – has passed away. Her
brother has asked that I inform forum members on his behalf. Her passion for language learning and her constant desire to help other forum members, most notably her Deuxièmistes learning log partners, will be greatly missed. A service will be held in Toronto on August 28th. Details are as follows: In memory of Chen Chih-Pien We're deeply saddened to announce the unexpected but peaceful death of Chih-Pien on Tuesday, 19 August 2014 at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Beloved daughter of Chen Chi Nan and Seok Im, loving sister of Hao (Paul Genney), Hsin, Ying (George Watt), and Feng, and "favourite" aunt of William, Lin, and Sam. Visitation will be held on 28 August beginning at 5:30 pm at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne St., Toronto. The memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made. The family is selecting a charity that reflects Pien's lifelong interests. Details to be advised. Songlines will be greatly missed. I always enjoyed reading about her adventures and the fun French bookstores she had discovered. She helped so many people in so many ways, and she was always kind. (The longer I live, the more I'm convinced that kindness is one of the most profound virtues.)
Songlines told me about my favorite neighborhood in downtown Montreal, the one with all the foreign language books at Librairie Michel Fortin, and comics at Planète BD, and delicious Breton crepes just down the street. Whenever I visit it, I always think of the adventures she wrote about, and her joy in sharing a cool discovery. She will be remembered. This is terribly sad and I am so sorry to hear this news. She was very kind and helpful to me and so many others. She once sent me a long, lovely PM message inviting me to visit if I was in her area, and I wish that I could have met her. May her family and friends be comforted by the memory of her.

I am very saddened to learn of this. I had the great fortune of meeting and having
lunch with Pien on occasion on various of her trips back to Vancouver. She was a fascinating person with a very generous spirit and personality and a very engaging, gracious approach to life, with a number of wide-ranging interests. I recall her explaining her choice of user name for this site, which related to a reference she had read concerning Australian aboriginals' reported manner of travelling through their world by following songlines or dreamtracks, singing out geographic references to guide them. Any particular songline might involve a number of different languages depending on one's path through life. I was really struck with the poetic manner in which Pien discussed this, and I consider myself as much advantaged and improved by my brief contact with her as I am saddened and diminished in learning of her untimely passing. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

How sad, especially in light of her recent announcement that she was in the hospital and had to step down from leading her TAC team. She was a great forum contributor and had so much to share and so much support to give. Please offer her family our condolences.

Very sad news. My condolences to all those who were close to her. She was always friendly and optimistic in my interactions with her through HTLAL, and she was one of a small number of people who personally encouraged me when I was struggling early on, which helped me stay motivated and also made me feel at home at HTLAL. For the most part, we are an anonymous community bound together by an affection for language-learning. Despite that anonymity, over the years, we do get to know one another to a certain extent. Songlines and I did not share language interests in common, so my interactions with her were minimal. That being said, I read many of her posts and found her to be a gentle soul. I enjoyed reading her insights to language-learning. I, and the rest of the community, will miss her. My sympathies to her family and friends. Rest in peace.
