In terms of money, I've probably spent about 1 hour's wages in the last year for language learning. Once
you've acquired the courses you need, the expense goes way down. The modern Internet, youtube,
Gutenberg, Librivox etc, etc, etc have
made so much native and learning content available for free.

It's mostly time and energy, which are some of the most precious things we have.

Hmm, secondhand books now and then (anything from a €1/$1/10SEK and upwards), the occasional immersion trip to Ireland (~€200, plus accomodation and travel expenses), Polyglot Gathering, Esperanto weekend...

Free sources: the local library, and the internet (well, I pay for my broadband connection, and may spend most of my online time on language-related activities).

Two monthly subscriptions:

- VoilaTV, for French cable ($30/month).
- Izneo Illimité, for thousands of BDs (9.90€/month).

We got rid of our English-language cable, which pays for the monthly stuff.

Other expenses:

- Big purchases at Amazon.fr, Schoenhof's store in Cambridge, Renaud-Bray stores in Montreal and Planet BD in Montreal ($100/purchase, several times per year).
- Tutors (quite a bit before my B2 exam, an occasional rare session now).
- Courses (very rarely, and mostly for Egyptian).

The big purchases are made whenever I have access to a bookstore and I can afford to splurge a bit.

Russian classes this year will cost me £435 for 54 hours of classroom time. I'd guess that's more than people are paying elsewhere? A bit of a rip-off considering that the class level is not really challenging. However, it is my main motivation for weekly studying.

For books and online offerings I have spent maybe £35 in that time (I mostly buy them second-hand).

I haven't counted going to the cinema for foreign films, but that would be another big chunk of cash.

Money spent on effective education is rarely wasted money in my eyes. But I will rethink this expenditure for the coming year. In most of my languages I should be able to get a lot more out of the free materials.

I'm guessing about $100 this past year. One thing I found when I was suffering wanderlust and contemplating adding more languages to my current learning list, is that one of my criteria was: how much free stuff is there online for language X? I was dissuaded from Irish because for materials that helped beginners with pronunciation, I would have to fork over a lot of money.

Cost is another thing that trimmed my potential language list. :) I realized that I would have to buy more dictionaries, more grammar books, etc. So it's just cheaper to stick with a few languages (my next log post will reflect more on this).

For any language, I find I am hesitant to spend more than $30 on any one thing, be it a program, books, etc. Thankfully my libraries have resources also, like Assimil's Italian With Ease (I'll certainly use that!). So far Japanese is by far the one I've spent the most money on.

It could easily have been a lot more, except that I taught a lot of French classes on italki and used the credits that
I earned for Spanish and Tagalog tutoring. I'm almost out of credits now, so I may or may not purchase more in
the next few weeks.

How is teaching for italki? I was contemplating doing that for tutoring.

Since 2011 my biggest expenses have been:

Seven Assimil courses, figure $80 or more each, = $560
Audible membership x2 = $260 (good for four Pimsleur courses)
Greek books = @ $100
Random other course books = @ $100
French books and bds = $ a lot. I don't want to count.

Then there are the streaming services. I don't do all of them every year, and only
have Netflix and Mubi now:

Netflix = $8.32 / month
Mubi = $35 / year (totally worth it!)
Hulu Plus = $8 / month
Drama Fever = $10 / month
Amazon Prime = $80 / year (not worth it)

And then there are the toys. I just spent $350 on an iPad mini with retina display,
and I didn't really need it, but streaming movies are so pretty & crisp on the screen
- part of my rationalization was that it would make the super challenge so much more
enjoyable!

I haven't added it up, but I'd be embarrassed to admit how much money I spend on books. I love
to visit used book stores and buy random foreign language learning materials. I'm really bad
at buying books for languages I have way down on my hit list, because I can get a good deal.

Hmmm... I had a private tutor for about 5 months (suspended them because classes started back up) which ran about $160/month, so about $800.

I bought Pimsleur 4 for $112 (I think) sometime in the Spring.

I would definitely say at least $200+ on books/physical materials since the New Year.

I use Netflix but I didn't originally get it for language learning so I'll leave that out.

And that's only since the beginning of the year (I didn't get serious until I think February, the random stuff I've bought throughout the years is negligible compared to what I've bought in the past 9 months). I got a lot of my beginner materials for free from a friend (Pimsleur 1-3, MT, RS).

I don't regret a single penny of it. Money is temporary; learning something never goes away. Not to mention, I'll have one hell of a library when I buy a house.
