hehe sorry if I was a bit unclear. I was only referring to the fact that portuguese has more speakers than french but the latter seems to be much more highly regarded among people of the west.

Certainly, English is the most beautiful language there. The sound of English speech is something I admire, it's not as arty and metro as French and not as harsh as German, but something in-between. Especially, when a renowned actor reads a passage of some literary work it tends to be really majestic and beautiful. In addition, one of the greatest merits of English is its flexibility - it sounds great also in less formal situations and it fits many kinds of music equally good (the words are usually short and they rhyme quite well with others). And since English is so popular and virtually everyone can speak it, it has also a quality of ubiquity which means it can be used in so many situations and places all over the world, that it doesn't have any (good or bad) associations that most of other languages have. It is somehow neutral and gives only the precise meaning of the message (e.g. without the euro - high class connotations of French or lower class - machismo style of Spanish). It's so, well I would say, clear.
The other languages I like are French (so cute, especially when spoken by a woman ;-)) and Japanese (very different from the European ones but equally nice; I like Japanese culture and hope to learn this language someday). Yup, it is Polish. Well I guess it's a little hard for me - as a native speaker - to say whether it is beautiful or not. Of course it can sound very nice, but there are also lots of words which seem strange and totally unfamiliar to a foreigner. And certainly it is difficult but this means also that it is rewarding - and so mastering Polish can probably give you a lot of satisfaction. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Does Polish sound somewhat like Russian? I watched Kieslowski's Dekalog about a year ago and I can't really remember if Polish sounded like Russian or not.
I bet you probably don't like that comparison being how Poland has been bullied around a little bit by Russia,their big Slavic cousin, but I really love the sound of Russian.Thanks Roland. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Well, to an English native speaker it probably does, however while the grammar is pretty similar, the vocabulary is - to a large extent - different. I can't understand Russian at all.
And of course I don't mind comparing Polish to Russian - until the XVIII century we used to bully them ;-) Me, I've never really liked the sound of Russian, but some of my friends love it and they say it's one of the most beautiful languages in the world. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Rafal, how much Ukrainian do you understand? If you see both written Russian and Ukrainian, which one do you understand more of?
I think I haven't decided yet what my favourite language is. For Latin based languages I'd say Portuguese (Brazilian sounds more "normal" yet European sounds "cooler"). I'm not as captivated by certain languages' sounds and find many simply interesting, but not "drop dead beautiful" like some people find them.
