Hello fellow students,
I'm an avid Star Wars Fan, and I recently stumbled upon a spaceship by the name of
Renhoeck.
I've already asked my Dutch-speaking friend, he agreed that ren means to run, and hoeck means corner. He also pointed out that I should pronounce hoeck like hook with a kind of softer k at the end.
Now my question ... what does that name mean? Assuming the person who named it knew what she was doing, of course. My interpretation: It means running around corners or cutting corners, indicating a fast and nimble ship. My friend disagrees, however he admits that while he's technically bilingual he doesn't know very much besides everyday usage about Dutch.
(It might be of interest to you that most of the names in Star Wars have some kind of meaning in a living, real world language. For example, Natalie Portman's character Padmé Amidala is composed of Padmé which means Lotus (or something like flowering lotos?) in Sanskrit, and Amygdala, which while meaning Almond is also the center of emotions in the human brain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdala)
What do you think?
