If you'd like to get into the Superhero comics of Marvel, DC and the like, this guy has put together a list of recommendations on where to start from.

A Game of Thrones looks interesting (the real book was amazing)

edit: "comics" should be "(comics)", the forum changes it automatically in the link above

Again, thank you very much for the suggestions. I'll probably start reading Peanuts first, because it looks funny and cute.

I'd say:
-Blankets (Craig Thomson)
-Habibi (Craig Thomson)
-Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi. Availabe in English). And then watch the movie.
-Guy Delisle's "Pyongyang", "Shenzhen", and possibly (if you like his style) his ones about Burma and Jerusalem (but it gets a bit repetitive).

I vote Chew! It's a fun comic with great characters and art. I especially love the detail put in the background.

Without a doubt, the greatest graphic novel writer in English is Alan Moore. His works are mature, and probably more difficult as the writing goes (but of course a difficult graphic novel still isn't terribly difficult). "From Hell" has already been mentioned--that's probably his finest work.

Other great works of his are

Watchmen
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Vols. 1 & 2)
Miracleman
Swamp Thing
The Killing Joke
V for Vendetta

The Preacher series by Garth Ennis is also a lot of fun.

Sandman as well as Coraline by Neil Gaiman are classics with complex themes. Just make sure you end up with the graphic novel version and not the novella if that's what you're after.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is definitely worth looking at, particularly if you're after something light, easy and silly/hilarious with an abundance of colloquial speech-style language.

There's also a variety of US TV shows, films, cartoons/animations, and books that have their own comics including Twilight, My Little Pony, Buffy and CSI.
