A very recent and awesome turn in emk's awesome log lead me to searching for transcripts of tv series. Elexi wrote a link for an amazing source of the French ones (the game of thrones, eureka and others at hypnoweb.net). And I went googling and found this article about a guy who learnt with telenovelas. The article is about how he learnt Spanish by going through the tv series (mexican telenovelas), took piece of an episode at a time, made transcript (or used a premade one) and studied everything included. Grammar, vocab, idioms, everything. And than practiced speaking.

It is like intensive reading applied on tv series and the telenovela is the main core which gives the structure to the learning process. The article includes a few nice links to transcript sources. I wanted to try the telenovela method, but couldn't find a script for Larin Izbor (the
Croatian soap opera I'm watching). I can't believe someone actually stopped the tv show every few seconds to transcribe it. I wish I hadn't read the article, I feel a new project rearing its ugly head. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

This seems like a good idea, but any idea where to find the transcripts on hypnoweb.com? I'm just finding information about the various series.

at hypnoweb search site, go through quartiers, that is a list of series that have their own fan site there. Choose some, go to episodes, choose a serie and there will be a table of what all is available, including transcripts.
However, some are just as imprecise as the subtitles, such as for Eureka. I wondered, would anyone be interested in making transcripts, putting together and perhaps on a website somewhere (not sure whether on wikia)? I would be more than willing to get the imperfect transcript or perhaps subtitles turned into a text file and complete them to follow the dubbing perfectly. But certainly not for everything I watch. It's just too much time spent making the tool. But if there were more people interested, it wouldn't be so hard to get a larger amount of material done. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think there's a similar site here: VIKI. Don't know much about the perfection aspect but the initiative is very good.

So, subtitles are now illegal as someone linked on the general forum. What comes next? Really, if those (are swear words punished on this forum anyhow? I could write fifty right now in several languages) want my money, than why don't they make good quality subtitles part of the dvd?

I love the telenovelas as a source of spoken Spanish. I wouldn't go so far as to call is a method but that's just a
minor point. I would like to point out the some or much of the subtitles of the Telemundo Youtube channels are quite bad in terms of linguistic accuracy. Just be careful. What you see is not always what you hear. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Oddly enough I've found Telemundo's over the air broadcast shows with "Closed Captions" to be highly accurate. Then, no subtitles when their shows go to DVD. Go figure! Youtube has been using "automatic captions" lately on many of the videos which seem to be derived from some sort of speech to text algorithm. I checked out some of the non-uploaded "automatic captions" on a video in Portuguese and found them only about 50% accuracy at best, so beware if the subtitles aren't embedded.
