I have heard that Professor Arguelles likes to shadow while walking or doing something
active, but can you also shadow a foreign language while you are cycling on a steady
medium pace? Or would this be ineffective?

I ask this because I find shadowing while sitting or standing still to be a bit dull, but
while cycling it may be more tolerable.

Why not. If you won't do it in downtown, but in the countryside where you can let your concentration wander, it seems a splendid idea. But I would not do it in traffic.

PS. I myself am already too fuzzy minded a nature; if I cycle (I do it every day), it is a challenge big enough to deal with the way and not forget about my surroundings. Immersion would be dangerous. But most people have sharper senses.

Sure, obviously I won't do it in busy areas. There are quiet meadows with cycling paths
close to where I live. I might try it out there soon.

Just wondering if others here have tried it before.

NO! I love to cycle too but it just doesn't work nearly as effectively. I accept shadowing
on a bike as a substitute but not as an equal session. I think that in a most effective
session you should be gesturing and embodying the voices on the tape, and I think that
being able to close your eyes to concentrate is an essential way of keeping your mind from
distraction.

Shadowing sat down has similar problems. You can't put your whole body into the act. You
can't embody the voices. In my opinion you should feel a bit out of breath by the end of a
chunk. I try to actually get some exercise while I do it, since the more tired I get, the
less likely I am to end up thinking about trivialities during.

@Retinend,

What about combining unrecorded cycling shadowing sessions with recorded 'on foot'
shadowing sessions?

It might not be as effective as doing it solely on foot with a recording device, but it
may significantly reduce the dullness factor and make shadowing more enjoyable and more
durable as a method.

My apologies - first, what do you mean by "unrecorded" and "recording device"?

Sorry, let me clarify. When you are cycling you obviously can't constantly stop to see how
you are doing by briefly listening to a recording while this is possible when you are on
foot. You see? So, the former is a bit more intuitive.

So you mean that you record your own shadowing and listen back to it (your voice) to
compare to the original? I've never done this myself, so I can't compare my experience,
sorry.
