German is my number one language.
My ultimate goal is to get to native or near native fluency. Undoubtely, my favorite language. Finnish is my second favorite and I'd like to get to B2 level with it. I'm learning it more for its beauty than usefulness. Spanish is the third one I plan on learning. Truthfully I'm not interested in it but its good for getting higher pay so whatever. I'd like to learn a fourth, but I'm not sure which one would be a good compliment to the others. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Maybe the question is: can you efficiently deal with a fourth all at the same time? If you can,you could go for something you've always liked but never imagined you'd learn.

If you want a compliment to the rest, maybe a Slavic language to round out the European languages, such as Russian or Polish? Or you could consider Swedish due to the fact that it is a common second language in Finland and related to German. I do think that you have a lot on your plate as it is right now. German and Finnish have complex grammars and foreign vocabularies to English speakers and Spanish can be deceiving as it can get quite complex at higher levels.

You make a good point. I only plan on becoming conversant in Spanish so I don't think I'd have to spend so much time on it. But it may be too much to do...I'll just have to give it a trial run. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Decide when you've achieved your goals in the first three :-) I don't necessarily mean the high levels like B2 or C1, but as long as you are busy enough with your two-three languages, try not to think of it (and if you're not busy enough with Finnish, you're doing it wrong :D). Many people's favourite part of learning is when you're a beginner, but if you just want to experience it again and again, you'll learn more about linguistics and languages in general than any specific language.
In general, I'm afraid "I want to learn one more language" is not a good reason. If you don't have an interest in anything specific, you're far more likely to drop it. But don't worry, you're on one of the most intriguing TAC teams this year. Your teammates will hopefully help you deal with too much wanderlust and inspire you to work towards basic fluency instead of wondering what you want to study when you've achieved it :) 5 persons have voted this message useful | |||
