The rules are that short words user -er, words with 2 or more syllables use -more.
Exceptions: Past particles and words that cannot be compared (for emphasis) use "more",
2 syllable words spelled with a -y use -er, some areas are disputed such as "polite" "common" and "stupid".

This is a transition from a synthetic method to an analytic one, transition is always annoying in any language and
leaves irregularities during.
