Can someone tell me how to transport words that I highlight on my kindle to Anki?.
Ideally, I would like to add the English definition with a click of a button. If I can include the source sentence that would be great too. I suspect that there is a way to do it, but I have not found it yet. My kindle just updated itself, and now saves every word I look up in a separate section
called "vocabulary builder." It's pretty cool. For example, on the Vocabulary Page I'll select "Harry Potter" and find that I've looked up 380 words already (yikes!). It will give my the dictionary definition (e.g.: ansioso: ansi`oso, -a. ag. anxious) and the Usage (Il signor Weasley continuava a controllare e ricontrollare ansioso la cartina della metropolitana appesa sopra i finestri). You can use convert them to flashcards on the kindle, where they give you the usage but have to click for the English definition, and where you can mark a card as mastered. It's not spaced-repetition like Anki, which is a drawback. I'd bet there is a way to download the file and import it into another program, though. I'm thinking about getting a refurbished first generation Paperwhite, but, IIRC, the firmware of the first generation PWs didn't come with the vocabulary builder app. However, according to the Amazon firmware page, it does now. This has been on my to-do list for a while but I've not gotten round to it yet: copying my Kindle highlights from the last few books I've read into Anki.
On Amazon there's a Your Highlights page that shows everything you've highlighted. From there I suppose you can copy and paste into Anki. I haven't yet investigated if there's a simpler or more automated way, but for me it's going to require a bit of manual work anyway to set up cloze deletions etc. I've never heard of the vocabulary builder thing before. This is going to be unavoidably self-serving, but if you want to highlight entire sentences, and not just words, I have a tool in private beta that several HTLALers have been testing out. It works with the Kindle and Moon+ Reader Pro, and it comes with extensions for both Anki and Chrome. It currently supports English, French and Spanish, and it integrates with several online dictionaries.

I have a first generation Paperwhite, and it too recently updated itself to include the Vocabulary Builder. My firmware version is: Kindle 5.4.4.2 The Vocabulary Builder is terrific! When I was first exploring it, I was worried that all of my looked-up words would be jumbled together in a confusing mix, but the Kindle also groups them according to the individual books that they originate from (especially important to those of us who read multiple languages on our device). So, although I can't select "all French vocabulary words" for example, I CAN select the title of a French book that I've read and practice just those words and not have to deal with words from other books or languages at the same time. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
