This is a large part of the enjoyment for me. If it's a language I've seen a lot of (i.e. German, French) then the puzzle is "how on EARTH is that pronounced?". When I finally get to learn the pronunciation and what commonly seen words are, I've very delighted: it's like I've entered a special club. :)

I think that's the best reason we've had in the thread so far.
But really, it is annoying how most people question our hobby. I am not walking around, asking people wild questions "why would anyone want to play table tennis?" or "isn't it a waste of time to paint when you know you'll never sell a single work?". |

I have that issue whenever I tell people I study a degree in Humanities with the Open University. The answer I enjoy studying doesn't seem to suffice. I think people believe I have a career or fiancial reason for doing it.

The best is when this sort of questions are asked by people that pass their days watching crappy tv.
But sincerely, who cares. If someone thinks we are weirdos because we like to study foreign languages, he has a
problem, not us ;) Don't let anyone decide what you should do. People who let others decide for their life then
criticises people who don't.

Why am I learning a language at all?
To prevent Alzheimer's Disease and because it's better than spending my free time on video games or TV.
Why Swedish?
Sweden has an admirable culture, I've read lots of Scandi fiction, and it's one of the less difficult languages for English speakers to learn.

In my book, if you want to do it, its good enough. I wouldn't be offended by a french speaker saying they wanted to learn English for no other reason than they wanted to.
