Dear all,

My name is Jenifer and I'm doing a PhD at the Institute of Education, University of London. My research is on
informal, self-regulated online language learning, with a focus on learning Chinese as a foreign language.

By taking part in this research project:
1. You get a chance to learn Chinese for free
2. You will be supported with using the technology
3. You will be encouraged to reflect your learning
4. You can help language teachers to understand how people use online language learning platforms

If you decide to take part in the research, here are the things that you will do:
1. Attend a briefing session in Central London (or on Skype) where you will be assisted with using the technology
2. Record your lessons using screen-recording software at your leisure
3. Reflect on your experience and thoughts
4. Attend follow-up interviews (face-to-face or Skype)

For the duration and the frequency of taking the lessons, they are entirely up to you.

Your participation in this study is crucial to help understanding how language learning occurs in this kind of
virtual learning environments and how technology is changing the way people learn languages. If you
are a native speaker of English or other European languages, aged 18 or above, and is interested in
learning Mandarin Chinese using online platforms, please contact me at who01@ioe.ac.uk

Thank you very much for reading this.

Best wishes,
Jenifer

Why do we have to live in London, if we study through an online plateform?

Hi, thank you for your question. It's preferable that participants live in London because there will be several face-to-
face sessions which will be held in London.

I am happy to PM anyone who's interested in participating with the link to a website which contains more details of
the research. :)

Hi everyone, it is also possible to participate in my research through Skype if you don't live in London. Please
contact me at who01@ioe.ac.uk for more details if you're interested. Thank you.
