Hi. I'm new at this forum and this is my first post. :)

I just wanted to add that here in Argentina it's common use for young people to use a variation of the English "Sorry", pronounced with a soft r, like the r in Spanish "cara". It would be: "sori". It's often used when you make a blunder, to say that you're sorry. It's not, however, used to replace the "lo siento" meaning that you would use in a funeral for example, or the "perdón" meaning equivalent to "excuse me".

Obviously, it's not official, it's just a fashion that's been going on for about 12-14 years now (or at least that's what I think. Maybe it's been longer, but I'm 26 so I don't know if it was common use when I was little).

the verb is lislokh-to forgive, coming from the root s-l-kh

German also has "(ich bitte Sie um) Verzeihung", lit. "(I ask you for) forgiveness"

... it may be more common in the north - I never seem to hear it in Bavaria, Austria or Switzerland...

...and French has "désolé" which is fully equivalent to "sorry".

Also : "excusez-moi", "pardon"...
